The Iron Giant Rig for Blender (v1.0)
The Iron Giant Rig for Blender (v1.0) by Raymond Schmitz
Hi! I made this Iron Giant rig in Blender for everyone to play around with (made in v.2.90.1).
I used rigify to create the basic human rig and added some additional bones to help support parts that are specific to this character.
This is the first rig I made in Blender so some things might still be a bit wonky (for example the eyelids). But if people enjoy the rig I might try to fix those issues and make a v2.0.
Installation
Before opening the file make sure you enable the add-on “Rigify” in Blender.
Edit -> Preferences -> Add-ons -> Search for “Rigify” and check the box.
Be sure to check the Auto-Save Preferences box (Lower left corner in the Preference box) so that the settings will be remembered each time you start Blender.
If the rig is slow in playback you can check the “Simplify” box in the Render Properties and set the Viewport -> Max Subdivision to 0.
Credit
I don’t have ownership over this character, hence I share it for free. So please only use it for educational/non-commercial purposes. I would love to see what you create with this rig so please don’t hesitate to share it with me.
Some final words
Creating this model and rig was a big learning experience for me. The Iron Giant is a movie I highly appreciate when seeing it each time. The story, the characters. The Iron Giant isn’t merely a robot made for destruction, inside it has a heart and is able to show empathy. Maybe something to remember while animating him. ; ) Enjoy!
